DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Tuesday, June 21, 2016

Today’s scripture reading:

Jesus said that if we truly love God and our neighbor, we will naturally keep the commandments. This is looking at God’s law positively. Rather than worrying about all we should not do, we should concentrate on all we can do to show our love for God and others. (NLT)

Matthew 22:34-40 – But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees with his reply, they thought up a fresh question of their own to ask him. One of them, an expert in religious law, tried to trap him with this question: “Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?”

Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all our mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the other commandments and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”

Jesus said to [the lawyer]. “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” — Matthew 22:37 (NRSV)

Dewitt Watson’s (Ohio) story is titled “THE HEART OF THE MATTER;” here is Dewitt’s story:

“Several years ago at Christmastime, I went with my son and his family to see the ‘Festival of Lights,’ a beautfil display of Christmas decorations and lights. As my grandchildren were talking in all the sights, my grandson, who was about six at the time, came up with a question: ‘I wonder what Jesus wants for a birthday present?’

“His twin sister quickly responded, ‘Jack, Jesus doesn’t want a present. He wants our love.’

“My jaw dropped in amazement at this statement. I thought of all the scholarly books of theology I had read; nothing came close to the profound insight of this child’s simple statement.

“It’s important that as Christians we know the doctrines essential to the history of our faith and that we are able to answer those who question the reason for our beliefs. But when it comes to devotion to our Lord Jesus, my granddaughter was right. Jesus just wants our love.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Love is the greatest gift we can offer to Jesus – or to anyone.

Prayer: God of love, thank you for the gift of your son. Help us to show our love for you and for him in the way we live our lives today. Amen.
