DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Tuesday, July 12, 2016

Today’s scripture reading:

The thought of two humans covered with fig leaves trying to hide from the all-seeing, all-knowing God is humorous. How could they be so silly as to think they could actually hide? Yet we do the same, acting as though God doesn’t know what we’re doing. Have the courage to share all you do and think with Him. And don’t try to hide—it can’t be done. Honesty will strengthen your relationship with God. (NLT)

Genesis 3:1-10 – Now the serpent was the shrewdest of all the creatures the Lord God had made. “Really?” he asked the woman. “Did God really say you must not eat any of the fruit in the garden?”

“Of course we may eat it,” the woman told him. “It’s only the fruit from the tree at the center of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God says we must not eat it or even touch it, or we will die.”

“You won’t die!” the serpent hissed. “God knows that your eyes will be opened when you eat it. You will become just like God, knowing everything, both good and evil.”

The woman was convinced. The fruit looked so fresh and delicious, and it would make her so wise! She ate some of the fruit. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her. Then he at it, too. At that moment, their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they strung fug leaves together around their hips to cover themselves.

Toward evening they heard the Lord God walking about in the garden, so they hid themselves among the trees. The Lord God called Adam, “Where are you?”

He replied, “I heard you, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.”

Chuck Kralik (Missouri) titled his story “HIDE-AND-SEEK;” here is a portion of Chuck’s story:

“One of my favorite games as a child was hide-and-seek. . . .

“Years later I realized that my childhood success at hide-and-seek was directly related to my friends’ lack of passion in looking for me. It’s easy to hide, after all, when no one is seeking you.

“At times in my life I have tried to hide from God. Bouts of rebellion have led me to places I thought God wouldn’t go. . . . Even when I was hiding, God was seeking a relationship with me with a passion I could not understand.

“. . . God seeks each of us passionately.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – God never stops seeking me.

Prayer: Dear God, our companion, forgive us when we try to hide from you. Thank you for seeking us passionately. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
