DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Sunday, July 24, 2016
Today’s scripture reading:
God has power over the clay (Judah [us]), and he continues to work with us [it] to make a useful vessel. But Judah must soon repent, or the clay will harden the wrong way. Then it will be worth nothing and will be broken and destroyed.
As the potter molded or shaped a clay pot on the potter’s wheel, defects often appeared. The potter had power over the clay, to permit the defects to remain or to reshape the pot. Likewise, God had power to reshape the nation to conform to his purposes. Our strategy should not be to become mindless and passive—one aspect of clay—but to be willing and receptive to God’s impact on us. As we yield to God, he begins reshaping us into valuable vessels. (NLT)
Jeremiah 18:1-11 – The Lord gave another message to Jeremiah. He said, “Go down to the shop where clay pots and jars are made. I will speak to you while you are there.” So I did as he told me and found the potter working at his wheel. But the jar he was making did not turn out as he had hoped, so the potter squashed the jar into a lump of clay and started again.
Then the Lord gave me this message: “O Israel, can I not do to you as this potter has done to his clay? As the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand. If I announce that a certain nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down, and destroyed, but then that nation renounces its evil ways, I will not destroy it as I had planned. And if I announce that I will build up and plant a certain nation or kingdom, making it strong and great, but then that nation turns to evil and refuses to obey me, I will not bless that nation as I had said I would.
“Therefore, Jeremiah, go and warn all Judah and Jerusalem. Say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am planning disaster against you instead of good. So turn from your evil ways, each of you, and do what is right.’”
The Lord said to Jeremiah, “Just like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand.” –Jeremiah 18:6 (NRSV)
Christopher Yopp (Virginia) titled his story “DIVINE POTTER;” here is a portion of Christopher’s story:
“. . . We are God’s good creation – but we aren’t always good! Yet no matter how often we become cracked or marred, in God’s hands we can become beautiful again as God shapes, molds, and recreates us in the divine image.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – I am made in the image of God.
Prayer: Loving God, mold our lives in such a way that we reflect the beautiful creation you desire us to be. Amen.
