DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Monday, July 25, 2016

Today’s scripture reading:

The fear of mountains or cities suddenly crumbling into the sea as the result of an earthquake or a nuclear blast haunts many people today. But the psalmist says that even if the world ends, we need not fear. In the face of utter destruction, the writer expressed a quiet confidence in God’s ability to save him. It seems impossible to consider the end of the world without becoming consumed by fear, but the Bible is clear—God is our refuge even in the midst of total destruction. He is not merely a temporary retreat; he is our eternal refuge and can provide strength in any circumstance.

War and destruction are inevitable, but so is God’s final victory. At that time, all will stand quietly before the Lord Almighty. How proper, then, for us to be still now, reverently honoring him and his power and majesty. Take time each day to be still and to exalt God. (NLT)

Psalm 46:1-11 – God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear, even if earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge!

A river brings joy to the city of our God, the sacred home of the Most High. God himself lives in that city; it cannot be destroyed. God will protect it at the break of day. The nations are in an uproar, and kingdoms crumble! God thunders, and the earth melts!

The Lord Almighty is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress.

Come, see the glorious works of the Lord: See how he brings destruction upon the world and causes wars to end throughout the earth. He breaks the bow and snaps the spear in two; he burns the shields with fire.

“Be silent, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.”

The Lord Almighty is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” –Psalm 46:1 (NIV)

Linda Jo Reed (Washington) titled her story “CALMED BY GOD’S WORD;” here is a portion of Linda Jo’s story:

“After completing a week of intense training sessions, I was anxious to get home. With traffic back up on the freeway, I had to find an alternate route home.

“On the way, I began to think about Bible verses that describe the way God cares for us and discovered that my anxiety had left me. . . . I pondered how God calls us to be still even in the midst of trouble. I remembered scripture that admonishes us to put aside our jumbled thoughts and to fix our minds on God’s presence and promises.

“When we make a habit of reading the Bible, memorizing it, and recalling it, the reassuring words of God can replace our worries. They are always close at hand when we need comfort or assurance in our daily lives.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Daily Bible reading helps me remember God’s presence.

Prayer: Dear Lord, sharpen our minds to recall your words so that we can trust you to ease our anxieties. Thank you for your loving care. We pray as Jesus taught us, saying, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one” (Matt. 6:9-13). Amen.
