DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Friday, August 5, 2016

Today’s scripture reading:

We hear with our ears, but there is a deeper kind of listening with the mind and heart that is necessary in order to gain spiritual understanding from Jesus’ words. Some people in the crowd were looking for evidence to use against Jesus; others truly wanted to learn and grow. Jesus’ words were for the honest seekers. (NLT)

Mark 4:3-9 – [Jesus said] “Listen! A farmer went out to plant some seed. As he scattered it across his field, some seed fell on a footpath, and the birds came and ate it. Other seed fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The plant sprang up quickly, but it soon wilted beneath the hot sun and died because the roots had no nourishment in the shallow soil. Other seed fell among thorns that shot up and choked out the tender blades so that it produced no grain. Still other seed fell on fertile soil and produced a crop that was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been planted.” Then he said, “Anyone who is willing to hear should listen and understand!”

Sandee Story (North Carolina) titled her story “WEEDING OUT NEGATIVITY;” here is a portion of Sandee’s story:

“. . . Negative thoughts seem to crop up faster than the positive ones and threaten to overpower them. As I do with the weeds, I must be diligent in pulling out destructive thoughts by the roots before they take over my thinking.

“I have found that the best way for me to weed my thoughts is to start each day focused on Bible reading and prayer. Setting my mind on God’s truth first thing in the morning acts as a protective shield thro0ughout the day. When negative thoughts arise, God’s promises help me to recognize them and give me strength to remain focused on God’s truth.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Staying focused on God’s truth helps me to think clearly.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for giving us your word of truth to lead us and to guide us in following your will. Amen.
