Today’s scripture reading:
In the Lord’s eyes, this poor widow gave more than all the others put together, although her gift was by far the smallest. The value of a gift is determined by the spirit in which it is given. A gift given grudgingly or for recognition loses its value. When you give, remember that gifts of any size are pleasing to God when they are given out of gratitude and a spirit of generosity. (NLT)
Mark 12:41-44 – Jesus went over to the collection box in the Temple and sat and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts. Then a poor widow came and dropped in two pennies. He called his disciples to him and said, “I assure you, this poor widow has given more than all the others have given. For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has.”
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and will all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. –Mark 12:30 (NIV)
Bliss Baird (Kansas) titled her story “MY ALL;” here is a portion of Bliss’ story:
“. . . Sometimes I wonder if God really cares about the little decisions we make. But whenever I read this story, I know that God notices what our sacrifices cost. When we offer God something as ‘small’ as thinking a holy thought when we want to be critical, wading through a trial with joy rather than bitterness, or loving someone who irks us, God notices our attempt to honor and obey. However, the reverse is also true. God knows when what I ‘sacrifice’ costs me little or nothing.
“I know that God forgives me when I don’t invest in the lives of others, but I realize that this is not the way to respond to God’s breath-taking, life-saving grace. Out of love, I want to serve God, not with just a little, not even with a lot, but with everything God has given me. God is worthy of my all!”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – What will I gladly sacrifice for God today?
Prayer: Lord, we want to offer you everything. Grant us opportunities to give you our all – all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. Amen.
Prayer Focus: SOMEONE WHO HAS SACRIFICED FOR ME
