Today’s scripture reading:
Paul planted the seed of the Good News message in people’s hearts. He was a missionary pioneer; he brought the message of salvation. Apollos watered the seed. He helped the believers grow stronger in the faith. Paul founded the church in Corinth, and Apollos built on that foundation. Tragically, the believers in Corinth had split into factions, pledging loyalty to different teachers. After the preachers’ work is completed, God is the one who makes Christians grow.
God’s work involves many different individuals with a variety of gifts and abilities. There are no superstars in the task, only team members performing their own special roles. We can become useful members of God’s team by setting aside our desires to receive glory for what we do. Don’t seek the praise that comes from people—it is comparatively worthless. Instead, seek approval from God. (NLT)
1 Corinthians 3:6-11 – My job was to plant the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God, not we, who made it grow. The ones who do the planting or watering aren’t important, but God is important because he is the one who makes the seed grow. The one who plants and the one who waters work as a team with the same purpose. Yet they will be rewarded individually, according to their own hard work. We work together as partners who belong to God. You are God’s field, God’s building—not ours.
Because of God’s special favor to me, I have laid the foundation like an expert builder. Now others are building on it. But whoever is building on this foundation must be very careful. For no one can lay any other foundation than the one we already have—Jesus Christ.
Paul wrote, “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.” –1 Corinthians 3:6 (NRSV)
Patricia Rivas (Valle del Cauca, Colombia) titled her story “PLANTING THE SEED;” here is a portion of Patricia’s story:
“Since I have a great love and zeal to minister to young gang members, I decided to visit an area where I knew I would find one of the most notorious gangs in our town. . . .
“Over time in these gatherings, the Bible became a seed—planted and nurtured by the prayers of many who desired to see change in the lives of these young people. Without a doubt it is God who gives the growth and helps us to guide others along the right path.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – What can I do today to bring God’s word to others?
Prayer: Lord of all, may the word we speak in your name give new life to those who hear it. Amen.
