Today’s scripture reading:
Four elements of true thanksgiving: (1) remembering what God has done, (2) telling others about it, (3) showing God’s glory to others, and (4) offering gifts of self, time, and resources. If you are truly thankful, your life will show it. (NLT)
Deuteronomy 11:18-20 – So commit yourselves completely to these words of mind. Tie them to your hands as a reminder, and wear them on your forehead. Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are away on a journey, when you are lying down and when you are getting up again. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates . . .
* The basis of praise is declaring God’s character and attributes in the presence of others. When we recognize and affirm his goodness, we are holding up his perfect moral nature for all to see. Praise benefits us because it takes our mind off our problems and needs and focuses on God’s power, mercy, majesty, and love. (NLT)
1 Chronicles 16:8-12, 24-25 – Give thanks to the Lord and proclaim his greatness. Let the whole world know what he has done. Sing to him; yes, sing his praises. Tell everyone about his miracles. Exult in his holy name; O worshipers of the Lord, rejoice! Search for the Lord and for his strength, and keep on searching. Think of the wonderful works he has done, the miracles, and the judgments he handed down.
Publish his glorious deeds among the nations. Tell everyone about the amazing things he does. Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise! He is to be revered above all gods.
Remember the wonders [the Lord our God] has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced. –1 Chronicles 16:12 (NIV)
Rebecca Seaton (Tennessee) titled her story “JOURNALS OF PRAISE;” here is a portion of Rebecca’s story:
“Several years ago, I began incorporating journaling into my devotional time. . . .
“One winter, as the new year approached, I felt the Lord prompt me to begin journaling about the things I am thankful for. I decided to write these in black ink and label them ‘God’s Favor.’ I was amazed to see how many blessings God bestows on me throughout the day. Some blessings are small. Some are much bigger miracles.
“I have become much more aware of God’s love and blessings in every moment of the day. I no longer overlook God’s mercies or take them for granted. Now, when I flip through my devotional journal, my many blessings penned in black ink stand out. When we take note of God’s blessings each day, we can experience God’s love more fully.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – How can I be aware of God’s blessings today?
Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to become more aware of the many ways you bless us each day. We pray as Jesus taught us, saying, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one” (Matt. 6:9-13, NIV). Amen.
Prayer Focus: GRATITUDE FOR GOD’S BLESSINGS
