Today’s scripture reading:
Respect elderly people; take opportunities to demonstrate His love to strangers.
People often find it easy to dismiss the opinions of the elderly and avoid taking time to visit with them. But the fact that God commanded the Israelites to show respect for the elderly shows how seriously we should take the responsibility of respecting those older than we are. Their wisdom gained from experience can save us from many pitfalls.
How do you feel when you encounter foreigners, especially those who don’t speak your language? Are you impatient? Do you think or act as if they should go back where they came from? Are you tempted to take advantage of them? God says to treat foreigners as you’d treat fellow countrymen, to love them as you love yourself. In reality, we are all foreigners in this world because it is only our temporary home. View strangers, newcomers, and foreigners as opportunities to demonstrate God’s love. (NLT)
Leviticus 19:32-34 – “Show your fear of God by standing up in the presence of elderly people and showing respect for the aged. I am the Lord.
“Do not exploit the foreigners who live in your land. They should be treated like everyone else, and you must love them as you love yourself. Remember that you were once foreigners in the land of Egypt. I, the Lord, am your God.”
Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. –Hebrews 13:1-2 (NRSV)
Kathryn Helms (Maryland) titled her story “WELCOMING THE STRANGER;” here is a portion of Kathryn’s story:
“I once led a group that met twice a week for lunch at the local community college. . . .
“. . . Providing community, support, and a place for the new students to practice English was a gift God gave us to share with them. And their gift to us was their openness to share their culture and to give us the chance to entertain angels.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – I can share God’s love by inviting others into my life.
Prayer: Dear God, help us to overcome social barriers so that we can participate in your work in the world. Amen.
