Today’s scripture reading:

Realizing that life is short helps us use the little time we have more wisely and for eternal good. Take time to number your days by asking, What do I want to see happen in my life before I die? What small step could I take toward that purpose today?

Because our days are numbered, we want our work to count, to be effective and productive. We desire to see God’s eternal plan revealed now and for our work to reflect his permanence. If we feel dissatisfied with this life and all its imperfections, we must remember our desire to see our work established is placed there by God. But our desire can only be satisfied in eternity. Until then we must apply ourselves to loving and serving God. (NLT)

Psalm 90:12-17 – Teach us to make the most of our time, so that we may grow in wisdom.

O Lord, come back to us! How long will you delay? Take pity on your servants! Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, so we may sing for joy to the end of our lives. Give us gladness in proportion to our former misery! Replace the evil years with good. Let us see your miracles again; let our children see your glory at work. And may the Lord our God show us his approval and make our efforts successful. Yes, make our efforts successful!

May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us. –Psalm 90:17 (NIV)

Gale A. Richards (Iowa) titled his story “PLANTING GOD’S LOVE;” here is a portion of Gale’s story:

“As a young man I suffered a series of losses and failures that left me with a hard heart. The God I had known as a youth seemed to have disappeared. When I began to date the woman who became my wife, my life began to change. She saw something good in me and planted the seed of God’s love in my life. With time and nurturing, the seed grew into an understanding that even though I had turned my back on God, God hadn’t left me.

“It took several years of Christian love and my wife’s leading, but I returned to my faith with a renewed commitment to follow God’s ways. Jst as today’s reading says, God has compassion on us and satisfies us with unfailing love. God’s favor rests upon us. . . . Hurt, pain, failure, and pride can harden our hearts, but prayer and gentle words of witness can plant the seed of God’s love in those who need it most.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – How can I plant seeds of God’s love today?

Prayer: Almighty God, thank you for your unfailing love. Help us to plant the seeds of your love so that others may come to know you. Amen.
