Today’s scripture reading:
The light of Jesus’ truth is revealed to us, not hidden. But we may not be able to see or to use all of that truth right now. Only as we put God’s teachings into practice will we understand and see more of the truth. The truth is clear, but our ability to understand is imperfect. As we obey, we will sharpen our vision and increase our understanding. (NLT)
Mark 4:21-25 – Then Jesus asked them, “Would anyone light a lamp and then put it under a basket or under a bed to shut out the light? Of course not! A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light will shine.
“Everything that is now hidden or secret will eventually be brought to light. Anyone who is willing to hear should listen and understand! And be sure to pay attention to what you hear. The more you do this, the more you will understand—and even more, besides. To those who are open to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But to those who are not listening, even what they have will be taken away from them.”
Jesus said, “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life.” –John 5:24 (NIV)
Eugenie Daniels (Massachusetts) titled her story “LEARNING TO LISTEN;” here is a portion of Eugenie’s story:
“My husband, Dan, and I have been bird watching together for 20 years. Recognizing bird songs helps us to know which bird is near so that we can more easily spot it. . . .
“One spring morning, my husband and I paused on our walk through the woods to listen for more birds. The symphony of birdsong that morning reminded me of Jesus’ words in today’s reading: ‘Consider carefully what you hear.’ I paused to think: Have I been as attentive to words from God as I should be? Do I focus as carefully on God as I did to learn each individual bird song?
“Paying careful attention to scripture, sermons, and God’s whispers in our hearts helps us grow in faith. If we devote all our attention to careful listening, as I did when learning bird songs, we can increase in understanding and insight. But if we fail to pay attention, we may lose our perception of Christ and of God’s kingdom. If we make a commitment to listen for God with eagerness and attentiveness, we will deepen our faith.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – How can I pay more attention to God today?
Prayer: Dear Lord, please help us to be attentive to you so that we may grow in faith and in our knowledge of you. Amen.
Prayer Focus: THOSE WITH HEARING LOSS
