Today’s scripture reading:

People have tried all kinds of ways to please God, but God has made his wishes clear: He wants His people to do what is right, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him. In your efforts to please God, examine these areas on a regular basis. Are you fair in your dealings with people? Do you show mercy to those who wrong you? Are you learning humility? (NLT)

Micah 6:6-8 – What can we bring to the Lord to make up for what we’ve done? Should we bow before God with offerings of yearling calves? Should we offer him thousands of rams and tens of thousands of rivers of olive oil? Would that please the Lord? Should we sacrifice our firstborn children to pay for the sins of our souls? Would that make him glad?

No, O people, the Lord has already told you what is good, and this is what he requires: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. –Micah 6:8 (NIV)

Philip A., Rice (Michigan) titled his story “UNCHANGING VALUES;” here is a portion of Philip’s story:

“. . . Some parts of our lives can be a matter of individual choice: clothes, food, hobbies. But for Christians, compassion, honesty, peace-seeking, and justice are non-negotiable. We are called by Jesus to practice compassion and honesty, to seek peace and justice, and to be loyal to God in every situation. These ways of Christian living are as unchanging as the cardinal points on the compass. They are the standards by which Jesus lived and to which Jesus has called us to live.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Jesus calls me to a life of compassion, honesty, peace, and justice.

Prayer: Thank you, Holy One, for all the opportunities you put before us. Help us to honor Jesus’ call for peace and compassion as we pray, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” Amen. (Matt. 6:9-13, NIV).
