Dear Lord, open our hearts and our minds to the power of Your Word, which as we read, we may know, understand, and obey Your Word for us today. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. (Author unknown)
Today’s scripture reading:
This “law” means all of Scripture: the first five books of Moses, the Prophets, and the other writings. The more we know of the whole scope of God’s Word, the more resources we will have to guide us in our daily decision.
The more we delight in obeying God, the more fruitful we are. On the other hand, the more we allow those who ridicule God to affect our thoughts and attitudes, the more we separate ourselves from our source of nourishment. We must have contact with unbelievers if we are to witness to them, but we must not join in or imitate their sinful behavior. If you want despair, spend time with mocking sinners; but if you want God’s blessing, make friends with those who love God and his Word. (NLT)
Psalm 1:1-6 – Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with scoffers. But they delight in doing everything the Lord wants; day and night they think about his law. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season without fail. Their leaves never wither, and in all they do, they prosper.
But this is not true of the wicked. They are like worthless chaff, scattered by the wind. They will be condemned at the time of judgment. Sinners will have no place among the godly.
For the Lord watches over the path of the godly, but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.
Those who do not follow the advice of the wicked . . . are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper. –Psalm 1:1, 3 (NRSV)
Susana M. Allen (Jalisco, Mexico) titled her story “DEEP ROOTS;” here is a portion of Susana’s story:
“We recently spent some time living in the mountains of Boquete, Panama. . . . Though a few trees and plants do not survive the dry season in Panama, most return to their beautiful greens in the rainy season. Others, having deep roots, never change and give forth blooms of every color imaginable all year long.
“So it is in our spiritual lives. Dry times may come – times when we do not feel the love and closeness of the Lord. But our faith is strengthened when we are deeply rooted in scripture and prayer. We can rest in the hope that the dry times will be followed soon by seasons of God’s overflowing abundance.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – I can deepen the roots of my faith by reading the Bible.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for scripture that reminds us of your love and deepens our faith in you. Amen.
