Dear Lord, open our hearts and our minds to the power of Your Word, which as we read, we may know, understand, and obey Your Word for us today. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. (Author unknown)

Today’s scripture reading:

For His Holy Spirit speaks to us deep in our hearts … –Romans 8:16 (NLT)

The Holy Spirit is God’s promise or guarantee of eternal life for those who believe in him. The Spirit is within us now by faith, and by faith we are certain to live with Christ forever.

Paul uses adoption to illustrate the believer’s new relationship with God. In Roman culture, the adopted person lost all rights in his old family and gained all the rights of a legitimate child in his new family. He became a full heir to his new father’s estate. Likewise, when a person becomes a Christian, he or she gains all the privileges and responsibilities of a child in God’s family. One of these outstanding privileges is being led by the Spirit. We may not always feel as though we belong to God, but the Holy Spirit is our witness. His inward presence reminds us of who we are and encourages us with God’s love. (NLT)

Romans 8:10-17 – Since Christ lives within you, even though your body will die because of sin, your spirit is alive because you have been made right with God. The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as he raised Christ from the dead, he will give life to your mortal body by this same Spirit living within you.

So, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation whatsoever to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. For if you keep on following it, you will perish. But if through the power of the Holy Spirit you turn from it and its evil deeds, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.

So you should not be like cowering, fearful slaves. You should behave instead like God’s very own children, adopted into his family—calling him “Father, dear Father.” For His Holy Spirit speaks to us deep in our hearts and tells us that we are God’s children. And since we are his children, we will share his treasures—for everything God gives to his Son, Christ, is ours, too. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.

Those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. –Romans 8:14 (NIV)

Michele M. Rizzo (California) titled her story “IT’S OFFICIAL!” here is a portion of Michele’s story:

“On the day our request for adoption was granted, our family and friends filled the judge’s chambers to capacity. . . . When the judge signed, stamped, and granted the request for her adoption, our three-year-old daughter cried out, ‘It’s official!’ . . .

“Our adoption as children of God was made possible the moment Jesus cried out on the cross, ‘It is finished!’ Now all who accept Christ’s gift of saving love and willingly follow him shall be adopted and treated in all respects as God’s own children. Through adoption, we become brothers and sisters in Christ and receive the love and peace that God provides.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – We are God’s forever children.

Prayer: Thank you, Abba, Father, for making us your very own children through the sacrifice of your son, Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen.
