Dear Lord, open our hearts and our minds to the power of Your Word, which as we read, we may know, understand, and obey Your Word for us today. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. (Author unknown)
Today’s scripture reading:
Jesus said, “If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.” This verse is not a guarantee that we can get anything we want simply by asking Jesus and believing. God does not grant requests that would hurt us or others or that would violate his own nature or will. Jesus’ statement is not a blank check. To be fulfilled, our requests must be in harmony with the principles of God’s Kingdom. The stronger our belief, the more likely our prayers will be in line with God’s will, and then God will be happy to grant them. (NLT)
Matthew 21:18-22 – In the morning, as Jesus was returning to Jerusalem, he was hungry, and he noticed a fig tree beside the road. He went over to see if there were any figs on it, but there were only leaves. Then he said to it, “Ma you never bear fruit again!” And immediately the fig tree withered up.
The disciples were amazed when they saw this and asked, “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?”
Then Jesus told them, “I assure you, if you have faith and don’t doubt, you can do things like this and much more. You can even say to this mountain, ‘May God lift you up and throw you into the sea,’ and it will happen. If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”
Whatever you ask for in prayer with faith, you will receive. –Matthew 21:2 (NRSV)
Lydia Harbor (Montana) titled her story “COMPANIONS;” here is a portion of Lydia’s story:
“I let a friend of mine borrow my horse, Norman. . . . When it was summer again I realized how lonely I was without him. I used to talk in his ear about what was going on in my life and almost everything else.
“While Norman was away I found out that I didn’t have to tell my feelings just to a horse; I could tell them to God. I realized that God has always been there for me and always will be, so I got baptized. . . .
“. . . We can all listen for God and for the whisper of the Holy spirit to learn how to grow in our faith and deepen our relationship with God.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – God is always listening to me.
Prayer: Dear Father, thank you for listening to our prayers. Be with us and help us encourage others to find their path to you. We pray as Jesus taught us, saying, “Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation” (Luke 11:2-4, NIV). Amen.
