Dear Lord, open our hearts and our minds to the power of Your Word, which as we read, we may know, understand, and obey Your Word for us today. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. (Author unknown)

Today’s scripture reading:

Remaining in Christ means (1) believing that he is God’s Son, (2) receiving him as Savior and Lord, (3) doing what God says, (4) continuing to believe the Good News, and (5) relating in love to the community of believers, Christ’s body. (NLT)

John 15:1-10 – [Jesus said] “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. You have already been pruned for greater fruitfulness by the message I have given you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful apart from me.

“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. Anyone who parts from me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. But if you stay joined to me and my words remain in you, you may ask any request you like, and it will be granted! My true disciples produce much fruit. This brings great glory to my Father.

“I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. When you obey me, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father and remain in his love.”

Continue to live your lives in [Christ Jesus], rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. –Colossians 2:6-7 (NRSV)

Patricia M. Daniels (Florida) titled her story “STRONG ROOTS;” here is a portion of Patricia’s story:

“My daily walk goes by a lake that has cypress trees along the banks. . . .

“I thought about how much our life with God is like this tree. We, too, need the support of strong roots. Some of the roots grow straight and tall, mimicking the strong and direct teachings from scripture and the church. Others wrap around one another, forming strong support groups of friends and family, which encircle us and hold us tightly with love. Still others extend away from the tree, reminding us that we are to reach out and embrace others with God’s great love. I keep this image of the strong root system of the cypress tree as a guide to live by, knowing that I need many types of support to stay strong and connected to God.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Today I will stay rooted in God’s love.

Prayer: Holy God, help us to remember that we are connected to you and our community of faith just as strong roots are connected to a tree. Amen.
