Dear Lord, open our hearts and our minds to the power of Your Word, which as we read, we may know, understand, and obey Your Word for us today. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. (Author unknown)

Today’s scripture reading:

What did Jesus mean by “living water”? In the Old Testament, many verses speak of thirsting after God as one thirsts for water. God is called the fountain of life and the fountain of living water. In saying he would bring living water that could forever quench a person’s thirst for God, Jesus was claiming to be the Messiah. Only the Messiah could give me this gift that satisfies the soul’s desire. (NLT)

John 4:7-15 – Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.” He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food.

The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?”

Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who I am, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.”

“But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said, “and this is a very deep well. Where would you get this living water? And besides, are you greater than our ancestor Jacob who gave us this well? How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his cattle enjoyed?”

Jesus replied, “People soon become thirsty again after drinking this water. But the water I give them takes away thirst altogether. It becomes a perpetual spring within them, giving them eternal life.”

“Please sir,” the woman said, “give me some of that water! Then I’ll never be thirsty again, and I won’t have to come here to haul water.”

[Jesus] cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive. –John 7:37-39 (NRSV)

Dennis Burk (Texas) titled his story “LIVING WATER;” here is a portion of Dennis’ story:

“. . . At low points in my life, my soul has also felt dry and parched. My spirit probably has resembled a brown lawn or a dry creek bed. But by reaching out to God through prayer, worship, and Bible reading, my spirit flourishes again. Once again, my soul flows with God’s fresh and renewing water. God offers us a way to quench our thirst by drinking our fill of the living water God offers through Jesus Christ. The water God provides can restore what appears dry beyond recovery.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – God’s living water quenches my thirst.

Prayer: Dear God, when dry times come, we know that you offer living water that refills and renews our souls. Amen.
