Dear Lord, open our hearts and our minds to the power of Your Word, which as we read, we may know, understand, and obey Your Word for us today. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. (Author unknown)

Today’s scripture reading:

Jesus used this parable [the mustard seed] to explain that although Christianity had very small beginnings, it would grow into a worldwide community of believers. When you feel alone in your stand for Crist, realize that God is building a worldwide Kingdom. He has faithful followers in every part of the world, and your faith, no matter how small, can join with that of others to accomplish great things. (NLT)

Mark 4:26-33 – Jesus also said, “Here is another illustration of what the Kingdom of God is like: A farmer planted seeds in a field, and then he went on with his other activities. As the days went by, the seeds sprouted and grew without the farmer’s help, because the earth produces crops on its own. First a leaf blade pushes through, then the heads of wheat are formed, and finally the grain ripens. And as soon as the grain is ready, the farmer comes and harvests it with a sickle.”

Jesus asked, “How can I describe the Kingdom of God? What story should I use to illustrate it? It is like a tiny mustard seed. Though this is one of the smallest seeds, it grows to become one of the largest of plants, with long branches where birds can come and find shelter.”

He used many such stories and illustrations to teach the people as much as they were able to understand.

Jesus said, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move.   Nothing will be impossible for you.” –Matthew 17:20 (NIV)

Doug Wingert (Arizona) titled his story “CACTUS SEED FAITH;” here is a portion of Doug’s story:

“I’ve lived in the desert southwest of the United States for many years, but it wasn’t until I recently retired that I had time to truly appreciate the plants and animals of the Sonoran Desert. This desert . . . has abundant vegetation; the most notable is the saguaro cactus . . . But this giant plant starts out as a small black seed not much bigger than a comma on this page – possibly even smaller than a mustard seed.

“In today’s verse, Jesus tells his disciples that if they would have faith, even faith as small as a mustard seed, nothing would be impossible for them. Such is the power of our faith in God.

“Does having faith mean not having doubts? Does it mean that as a Christian I must have complete understanding of God’s word? I think not. I must remember that I can accomplish much good, even with ‘saguaro seed’ faith.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Through my acts of faith God can accomplish much.

Prayer: Dear God, give us faith to continue our walk with you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
