Dear Lord, open our hearts and our minds to the power of Your Word, which as we read, we may know, understand, and obey Your Word for us today. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. (Author unknown)

Today’s scripture reading:

The water of life is a symbol of eternal life. Jesus used this same image with the Samaritan woman. It pictures the fullness of life with God and the eternal blessings that come when we believe in him and allow him to satisfy our spiritual thirst.

Why would the nations need to be healed if all evil is gone? John is quoting from Ezekiel 47:12 [see below], where water flowing from the Temple produces trees with healing leaves. He is not implying that there will be illness in the new earth; he is emphasizing that the water of life produces health and strength wherever it goes. (NLT)

Revelation 22:1-5 – And the angel showed me a pure river with the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb, coursing down the center of the main street. On each side of the river grew a tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, with a fresh crop each month. The leaves were used for medicine to heal the nations.

No longer will anything be cursed. For the throne of God and of the Lamb will be there, and his servants will worship him. And they will see his face, and his name will be written on their foreheads. And there will be no night there—no need for lamps or sun—for the Lord God will shine on them. And they will reign forever and ever.

* The river mentioned in Revelation 22:1, 2. Both are associated with the river in the Garden of Eden. The river symbolizes life from God and the blessings that flow from his throne. It is a gentle, safe, deep river, expanding as it flows. (NLT)

Ezekiel 47:12 – “. . . All kinds of fruit trees will grow along both sides of the river. The leaves of these trees will never turn brown and fall, and there will always be fruit on their branches. There will be a new crop every month, without fail! For they are watered by the river flowing from the Temple. The fruit will be for food and the leaves for healing.”

Jesus said, “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” –John 14:3 (NIV)

Dave Caswell (Arkansas) titled his story “HEAVEN’S TRUE BEAUTY;” here is a portion of Dave’s story:

“During the 1980s I visited the Philippines on several occasions. . . . The huge tropical trees were like spires reaching toward heaven. . . . Off in the distance lay the sparkling sea. As a new Christian at that time, I often imagined that heaven must look something like that.

“When we think about heaven, it is often about the magnificence of the place, the pearl gates and the streets of gold. We try to imagine what it looks like, just as I did on my jungle run. Heaven will certainly be a glorious place; but over the years as I have reread today’s verse from John, I have come to realize that my longing is not so much for a place, but for a person. Heaven will be so wonderful because Jesus is there. We will be with him, looking into the face of the One who loves us with an everlasting love!”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Eternal life begins now and points me toward heaven.

Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, help us to meditate on eternity even as we experience the troubles of this day. Help us to increasingly reflect the joy of your presence in the world. Amen.
