Dear Lord, open our hearts and our minds to the power of Your Word, which as we read, we may know, understand, and obey Your Word for us today. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. (Author unknown)
Today’s scripture reading:
David contrasts God’s everlasting nature with the fleeting lives of his people. Nothing lasts unless it is rooted in God’s unchanging character. If our most impressive deeds fade to dust before God, where should we place our confidence? Only in a relationship with Him can we find anything permanent. God’s love never fades, and nothing can take it away. (NLT)
1 Chronicles 29:14-18 – “. . . But who am I, and who are my people, that we could give anything to you? Everything we have has come from you, and we give you only what you have already given us! We are here for only a moment, visitors and strangers in the land as our ancestors were before us. Our days on earth are like a shadow, gone so soon without a trace.
“O Lord our God, even these materials that we have gathered to build a Temple to honor your holy name come from you! It all belongs to you! I know, my God, that you examine our hearts and rejoice when you find integrity there. You know I have done all this with good motives, and I have watched your people offer their gifts willingly and joyously.
“O Lord, the God of our ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, make your people always want to obey you. See to it that their love for you never changes. . . .”
We have given you only what comes from your hand. –1 Chronicles 29:14 (NIV)
Drew Sappington’s (Florida) story is titled “OUR GIFTS;” here is a portion of Drew’s story:
“I don’t remember how old I was, but it was the first year I shopped for Christmas gifts on my own. My parents gave me some money and let me walk to a shopping area close to our house. . . . The clerk helped me pick out a costume-jewelry pin and purple scarf for my mother. That Christmas, for the first time, I was as eager to see my mother open her gift as I was to open my own gifts.
“Looking back, I am thankful for the clerk who spent so much time helping me. I have also had this thought: I could give my mother nothing that hadn’t been given to me. She certainly could have bought far nicer things for herself. Nevertheless, I think she was highly pleased to receive my gift.
“In the same way, we can give nothing to God that didn’t come from God in the first place. All our possessions, all our power, all our talents are gifts from God. Nevertheless, I believe that God is pleased by what we give.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – By giving to others, I show gratitude to God.
Prayer: O God, thank you for all the gifts you have given us. Thank you for allowing us to offer something in return. Amen.
