Dear Lord, open our hearts and our minds to the power of Your Word, which as we read, we may know, understand, and obey Your Word for us today. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. (Author unknown)
Today’s scripture reading:
Be glad for all God is planning for you. Be patient in trouble, and always be prayerful. –Romans 12:12 (NLT)
Most of us have learned how to be courteous to others—how to speak kindly, avoid hurting their feelings, and appear to take an interest in them. We may even be skilled in pretending to show compassion when we hear of others’ needs, or to become indignant when we learn of injustice. But God calls us to real and sincere love that goes far beyond being hypocritical and polite. Sincere love requires concentration and effort. It means helping others become better people. It demands our time, money, and personal involvement. No individual has the capacity to express love to a whole community, but the body of Christ in your town does. Look for people who need your love and look for ways you and your fellow believers can love your community for Christ. (NLT)
Romans 12:9-13 – Don’t just pretend that you love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Stand on the side of the good. Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. Never be lazy in your work, but serve the Lord enthusiastically.
Be glad for all God is planning for you. Be patient in trouble, and always be prayerful. When God’s children are in need, be the one to help them out. And get into the habit of inviting guests home for dinner or, if they need lodging, for the night.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. –Philippians 4:6 (NIV)
Katherine Brock (Georgia) titled her story “WE CAN PRAY;” here is a portion of Katherine’s story:
“As Christians, we spend much time wrestling with difficult scripture, debating gray areas, and trying to find God’s direction in our lives. While all these efforts are important, sometimes we tend to miss the most obvious answer before us: prayer. How often do we look at our world, grieve internally for the chaos, assign blame, and forget to pray? We may feel helpless, not knowing what to do. Sometimes God calls us to take action, to drop everything and be on the front lines of solving the problems. Other times, all we can do is pray. Often, we can do both.
“We all face important decisions in our personal lives, decisions that give us uncertainty or anxiety. If only God gave us simple instructions to follow! But scripture does: ‘Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition . . . present your requests to God. And the peace of God . . . will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.’
“Life is uncertain. But even if everything else is stripped from us, we can choose to pray.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – In the midst of turmoil, prayer brings me peace.
Prayer: Almighty God, may we never forget that prayer brings us close to you and that you are the source of our strength and peace. Amen.
