Dear Lord, open our hearts and our minds to the power of Your Word, which as we read, we may know, understand, and obey Your Word for us today. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. (Author unknown)
Today’s scripture reading:
“The darkness can never extinguish it” means the darkness of evil never has and never will overcome God’s light. Jesus Christ is the Creator of life, and his life brings light to humankind. In his light, we see ourselves as we really are (sinners in need of a Savior). When we follow Jesus, the true Light, we can avoid walking blindly and falling into sin. He lights our path ahead of us so we can see how to live. He removes the darkness of sin from our lives. Have you allowed the light of Christ to shine into your life? Let Christ guide your life, and you’ll never need to stumble in darkness. (NLT)
John 1:1-18 – In the beginning the Word already existed. He was with God, and he was God. He was in the beginning with God. He created everything there is. Nothing exists that he didn’t make. Life itself was in him, and this life gives light to everyone. The light shines through the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.
God sent John the Baptist to tell everyone about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony. John himself was not the light; he was only a witness to the light. The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was going to come into the world.
But although the world was made through him, the world didn’t recognize him when he came. Even in his own land and among his own people, he was not accepted. But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn! This is not a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan—this rebirth comes from God.
So the Word became human and lived here on earth among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the only Son of the Father.
John pointed him out to the people. He shouted to the crowds, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘Someone is coming who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before I did.’”
We have all benefited from the rich blessings he brought to us—one gracious blessing after another. For the law was given through Moses; God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. But his only Son, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart; he has told us about him.
Quoted verse: The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. –John 1:9 (NIV)
“Story” – Roland Rink (Gauteng, South Africa) titled his story “ANCIENT LIGHT;” here is a portion of Roland’s story:
“We spent three nights in a small, remote Cape coastal village. Due to the absence of light pollution, the night sky was ablaze with stars, planets, and all manner of twinkling light. . . . As I gazed in awe at the magnificence, I was struck by the fact that the light I was seeing was ancient light. . . .
“Jesus said, ‘I am the light of the world.’ Thousands of years later, this message is still true. His light has not expired in the lives of countless people. Jesus lived in such a way that his light continues to shine through the passage of time.
“What about us? Few of us will have the opportunity to shine such a bright light, but we all can shine a light that makes a difference. If we take the teachings of Jesus seriously and reflect the light of Christ in all the places we go and in the lives of those we encounter, we can make a difference in the world.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – No matter where I go, I will let Christ’s light shine through me.
Prayer: Dear God, by your Holy Spirit we will let your light shine through us each day. Amen.
