Dear Lord, open our hearts and our minds to the power of Your Word, which as we read, we may know, understand, and obey Your Word for us today. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. (Author unknown)

Today’s scripture reading:

Paul contrasts getting drunk with wine, which produces a temporary “high,” to being filled with the Spirit, which produces lasting joy. Getting drunk with wine is associated with the old way of life and its selfish desires. In Christ, we have a better joy that will cure our depression, monotony, or tension; our joy will be higher and longer lasting. We should not be concerned with how much of the Holy Spirit we have but with how much of us the Holy Spirit has. Submit yourself daily to his leading and draw constantly on his power. (NLT)

Ephesians 5:17-20 – Don’t act thoughtlessly, but try to understand what the Lord wants you to do. Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, let the Holy Spirit fill and control you. Then you will sing psalms and hyms and spiritual songs among yourselves, making music to the Lord in your hearts. And you will always give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Quoted verse: [God] will take great delight in you . . . [and] will rejoice over you with singing. –Zephaniah 3:17 (NIV)

“Story” – Tina Chaves (New Jersey, USA) titled her story “A JOYFUL NOISE!” Here is a portion of Tina’s story:

“As a teenager in the 1980s, I got swept up in the punk and new-wave-music craze. . . . I now appreciate many genres of music . . . Listening to composers such as Mozart or Bach now fills me with joy.

“As I reflect on my lifelong love for music, I am reminded that God is a music lover too. God created it, after all. Heaven is full of music and song. Scripture tells us that the angels in heaven continually sing praises to God.

“I believe God is deeply moved whenever we lift our voices in praise and adoration, making melody in our hearts. (See Eph. 5:19) [‘Then you will sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, making music to the Lord in your hearts.’] And God actually rejoices over us with singing. So through any style of music we may prefer, singing praises to God is truly a ‘joyful noise,’ for both us and God (see Ps. 100:1) [‘Shout with joy to the Lord, O earth!’].”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – I can worship God through any type of music.

Prayer: O God, we delight in the music we make in our hearts for you. May if fill your heart with joy. Amen.
