Dear Lord, open our hearts and our minds to the power of Your Word, which as we read, we may know, understand, and obey Your Word for us today. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. (Author unknown)
Today’s scripture reading:
The title, “His purpose in harmony as a family,” was inspired from today’s story in “The Upper Room,” which you can read below.
No matter what gifts a person has, each gift is given by the Holy Spirit. We are responsible to use and sharpen our gifts, but we can take no credit for what God has freely given us.
Paul compares the body of Christ to a human body. Each part has a specific function that is necessary to the body as a whole. The parts are different for a purpose, and in their differences they must work together. (NLT)
1 Corinthians 12:4-13 – Now there are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but it is the same Holy Spirit who is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service in the church, but it is the same Lord we are serving. There are different ways God works in our lives, but it is the same God who does the work through all of us. A spiritual gift is given to each of us as a means of helping the entire church.
To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another he gives the gift of special knowledge. The Spirit gives special faith to another, and to someone else he gives the power to heal the sick. He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and to another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to know whether it is really the Spirit of God or another spirit that is speaking. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, and another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. It is the one and only Holy Spirit who distributes these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.
The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up only one body. So it is with the body of Christ. Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into Christ’s body by one Spirit, and we have all received the same Spirit.
Quoted verse: The body is not made up of one part but of many. – 1 Corinthians 12:14 (NIV)
“Story” – Andrea Ramirez Zabala (Puerto Rico) titled her story “LEARNING FROM BEES;” here is a portion of Andrea’s story:
“In February 2017 the government evacuated my family, neighbors, and friends . . . We were all relocated to a new community with better living conditions. A week after I moved into my new house, a swarm of bees arrived. . . . I did not want to harm them, but I also did not want to share living quarters with them.
“I hoped that through prayer I would be able to determine what God was trying to teach me with the bees, so I asked my church family to pray with me. I then turned to the Bible. . . .
“We can follow the example of unity we see in bee colonies by working toward God’s purpose in harmony as a family, congregation, and community. When we come together for the greater goal of furthering God’s kingdom, we can be as unified and effective as a bee colony, working as one body.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – I am one of many members of the body of Christ.
Prayer: Almighty God, help us to work for your kingdom united through Christ. Amen.
