Dear Lord, open our hearts and our minds to the power of Your Word, which as we read, we may know, understand, and obey Your Word for us today. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. (Author unknown)

Today’s scripture reading:

The new heavens and the new earth are eternal, and in them safety, peace, plenty will be available to all. (NLT)

Isaiah 65:24 – I will answer them before they even call to me. While they are still talking to me about their needs, I will go ahead and answer their prayers!

* The widow’s situation was serious. She had lost her husband, and here her only son was dead—her last means of support. The crowd of mourners would go home, and she would be left penniless and alone. The widow was probably past the age of childbearing and would not marry again. Unless a relative came to her aid, her future was bleak. She would be an easy prey for swindlers, and she would likely be reduced to begging for food. In fact, as Luke repeatedly emphasizes, this woman was just the kind of person Jesus had come to help—and help her he did. Jesus has the power to bring hope out of any tragedy. (NLT)

Luke 7:11-17 – Soon afterward Jesus went with his disciples to the village of Nain, with a great crowd following him. A funeral procession was coming out as he approached the village gate. The boy who had died was the only son of a widow, and many mourners from the village were with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion. “Don’t cry!” he said. Then he walked over to the coffin and touched it, and the bearers stopped, “Young man,” he said, “get up.” Then the dead boy sat up and began to talk to those around him! And Jesus gave him back to his mother.

Great fear swept the crowd, and they praised God, saying, “A mighty prophet has risen among us,” and “We have seen the hand of God at work today.” The report of what Jesus had done that day spread all over Judea and even out across its borders.

Quoted verse: The Lord says, “Before they call I will answer.” — Isaiah 65:24 (NIV)

“Story” – Neliswa Chigudu (Johannesburg, South Africa) titled her story “BEFORE WE EVEN SPEAK;” here is a portion of Neliswa’s story:

“One day while driving to work, I was troubled about a task that God had laid out for me. I was late for work, caught in traffic, so I decided to listen to the radio. During the program someone gave a testimony that provided strength and clarity for my own struggle. I knew then that I had experienced God’s promise: even before we pray the Lord will answer.

“This reminded me of the story of the funeral of a widow’s son . . . Before the widow even opened her mouth, Jesus raised her son from death. Jesus saw her heart – and in love and great empathy gave the son back to his mother alive!

“God is truly our ever-present help in times of need. When we are living with sorrow or confusion, we can remember that God sees our hearts and will answer us – often before we even speak.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – God knows my pain even before I give voice to it.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us in the midst of pain and confusion not to forget your presence. May we at all times be sensitive to your voice as we pray, “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen” (Matt. 6:9-13, KJV). Amen.
