Dear Lord, open our hearts and our minds to the power of Your Word, which as we read, we may know, understand, and obey Your Word for us today. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. (Author unknown)
Today’s scripture reading:
[Whenever we have an opportunity, we should do good.]
Galatians 6:1-10 – Dear brothers and sisters, if another Christian is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. Share each other’s troubles and problems, and in this way obey the law of Christ. If you think you are too important to help someone in need, you are only fooling yourself. You are really a nobody.
Be sure to do what you should, for then you will enjoy the personal satisfaction of having done your work well, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. For we are each responsible for our own conduct.
Those who are taught the word of God should help their teachers by paying them.
Don’t be misled. Remember that you can’t ignore God and get away with it. You will always reap what you sow! Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful desires will harvest the consequences of decay and death. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. So don’t get tired of doing what is good. Don’t get discouraged and give up, for we will reap a harvest of blessing at the appropriate time. Whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone, especially to our Christian brothers and sisters.
Quoted verse: Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. – Philippians 2:4 (NRSV)
“Story” – Linawati Santoso’s (East Java, Indonesia) story is titled “OPPORTUNITY FROM GOD;” here is a portion of Linawati’s story:
“My grandma died when I was a senior in high school. Before Grandma died, she was unable to walk and often called my name to ask for help. At the time, I grumbled at her requests for my help. I thought, ‘why does Grandma always call me, not my brother or sister?’ Soon after, Grandma died . . .
“When Grandma was alive, my aunt helped care for her, since my aunt is unmarried and lives with my family. Recently, my aunt was also unable to walk. Unlike Grandma, my aunt rarely called for my help. But her condition reminded me of how I reacted to Grandma. I wondered, Is God giving me a second chance to be selfless and care for my family?
“In Galatians 6, Paul encourages the Galatians to carry each other’s burdens. This passage reminds me of the importance of helping others with their physical needs as well as their spiritual needs. Helping others is not an obligation but an opportunity from God. Knowing this, when God asks us to do something for another, we can complete the task with joy.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – I can bless others by responding joyfully when God calls me to help.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to use the opportunities you provide to care for others. Guide us to help others in the ways they need us most. Amen.
