Dear Lord, open our hearts and our minds to the power of Your Word, which as we read, we may know, understand, and obey Your Word for us today. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. (Author unknown)
Today’s scripture reading:
[A solid foundation of knowing, trusting Him.]
Obeying God is like building a house on a strong, solid foundation that stands firm when storms come. When life is calm, our foundations don’t seem to matter. But when crises come, our foundations are tested. Be sure your life is built on the solid foundation of knowing and trusting Jesus Christ. (NLT)
Luke 6:47-49 – [Jesus said] “. . . I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens, to my teaching, and then obeys me. It is like a person who builds a house on a strong foundation laid upon the underlying rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against the house, it stands firm because it is well built. But anyone who listens and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will crumble into a heap of ruins.”
Quoted verse: Strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. – Matthew 6:33 (NRSV)
“Story” – Dennis Denby (Illinois, USA) titled his story “WHAT REALLY MATTERS;” here is a portion of Dennis’ story:
“My 92-year-old uncle lives by himself in Sarasota, Florida. As Hurricane Irma was about to hit southern Florida, he really didn’t want to leave his house, but his kids convinced him that it was time to go. He packed everything that meant something to him in two suitcases and left.
“How simple things become during a storm! When it came down to choosing what to take in my uncle’s case, 92 years of life fit into two suitcases. . . . Repeatedly during storms we see that material things lose their importance, and things that really matter come to the forefront.
“. . . This parable illustrates that the Christian life isn’t about escaping the storms that come our way but about being able to weather the storms because of our foundation in Jesus Christ.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – During life’s storms, Jesus is my foundation.
Prayer: Dear God, as we weather life’s storms, help us to build our lives on the firm foundation of your Son so the world can see the source of our strength. Amen.
Prayer Focus: TO FOCUS ON WHAT IS IMPORTANT
