Dear Lord, open our hearts and our minds to the power of Your Word, which as we read, we may know, understand, and obey Your Word for us today. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. (Author unknown)
Today’s scripture reading:
[Fulfilling His purposes in all we do.]
Storing treasures in heaven is not limited to tithing but is accomplished by all acts of obedience to God. There is a sense in which giving our money to God’s work is like investing in heaven. But we should seek to please God not only in our giving but also in fulfilling God’s purposes in all we do. (NLT)
Matthew 6:19-24 – [Jesus said] “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where they can be eaten by moths and get rusty, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where they will never become moth-eaten or rusty and where they will be safe from thieves. Wherever your treasure is, there your heart and thoughts will also be.
“Your eye is a lamp for your body. A pure eye lets sunshine into your soul. But an evil eye shuts out the light and plunges you into darkness. If the light you think you have is really darkness, how deep that darkness will be!
“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
Quoted verse: Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. – Matthew 6:21 (NIV)
“Story” – Barry Wright (Georgia, USA) titled his story “OUR TREASURE;” here is a portion of Barry’s story:
“I stopped at my uncle’s country store to purchase some gasoline and went inside to pay. . . . My uncle was busy writing down the customers’ purchases on a carbon copy receipt book which he placed in a Coca-Cola case bulging with receipts. He allowed customers to buy from him on credit, and he never tried to collect from those who owed money. Many of his customers were in dire need of help and knew about my uncle’s generosity. My uncle would often open the store on a Sunday or a holiday to provide medicine or groceries for a family that needed help, and he never complained.
“I told my uncle that his business could do much better if he required cash or a credit card for purchases. He told me that he was ‘building treasures in heaven and not on this earth.’ . . . He is in heaven now and enjoying the treasures he stored up there, and I will always remember the lesson he taught me.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – I will store up treasures in heaven by helping those in need.
Prayer: Dear God, help us to remember to build our treasures in heaven, not in this world. Amen.
