Dear Lord, open our hearts and our minds to the power of Your Word, which as we read, we may know, understand, and obey Your Word for us today. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. (Author unknown)
Today’s scripture reading:
[We need His Holy Spirit within us, His armor surrounding us.]
These who are not “flesh-and-blood enemies” are demons over whom the devil has control. They are not mere fantasies—they are very real. We face a powerful army whose goal is to defeat Christ’s church. When we believe in Christ, these beings become our enemies, and they try every device to turn us away from him and back to sin. Although we are assured of victory, we must engage in the struggle until Christ returns, because Satan is constantly battling against all who are on the Lord’s side. We need supernatural power to defeat Satan, and God has provided this by giving us his Holy Spirit within us and his armor surrounding us. If you feel discouraged, remember Jesus’ words to Peter: “Upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.” (NLT)
Ephesians 6:10-17 – A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Quoted verse: God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. – 2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV)
“Story” – Teresa Naidoo (KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa) titled her story “FROM FEAR TO HOPE;” here is a portion of Teresa’s story:
“Depression has afflicted my life in different ways over the years. One constant was fear – the persistent catch in my chest that made it difficult to ever be completely at ease. It felt as if everything had the potential to fill me with fear. Often I would awake in a cold sweat, in the grip of the terror and dread of a panic attack. . . .
“For me, the greatest revelation in the verse quoted above was that God did not give me a spirit of fear but rather a spirit of a sound mind. One of the counselors at church advised me to rely on this verse; but to be honest, I did not believe this would help in any way. Still, the next time the terror came, I recited the verse and continued to repeat it – mostly because I did not know what else to do.
“It became my nightly declaration. Then, many weeks later, I realized that the fear had lessened. The repetition of this truth from God’s word had helped reduce my fear. God’s word is powerful enough to enable me to stand firm and courageous.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – With God’s word to encourage me, I can stand firm.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for your word. Help us to rely on it with the sure knowledge that you will always give us strength. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
