Dear Lord, open our hearts and our minds to the power of Your Word, which as we read, we may know, understand, and obey Your Word for us today. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. (Author unknown)
Today’s scripture reading:
[His Holy Spirit comforts us, guides us, gives us hope, courage.]
We cannot imagine all that God has in store for us, both in this life and for eternity. He will create a new heaven and a new earth, and we will live with him forever. Until then, His Holy Spirit comforts and guides us. Knowing the wonderful and eternal future that awaits us gives us hope and courage to press on in this life, to endure hardship, and to avoid giving in to temptation. This world is not all there is. The best is yet to come. (NLT)
1 Corinthians 2:1-10 – When I [Paul] first came to you, dear brothers and sisters, I didn’t use lofty words and impressive wisdom to tell you God’s secret plan. For I decided that while I was with you I would forget everything except Jesus Christ, the one who was crucified. I came to you in weakness—timid and trembling. And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit. I did this so you would trust not in human wisdom but in the power of God.
Yet when I am among mature believers, I do speak with words of wisdom, but not the kind of wisdom that belongs to this world or to the rulers of this world, who are soon forgotten. No, the wisdom we speak of is the mystery of God—his plan that was previously hidden, even though he made it for our ultimate glory before the world began. But the rulers of this world have not understood it; if they had, they would not have crucified our glorious Lord. That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.”
But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets.
Quoted verse: The sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. –Romans 8:18 (NRSV)
“Story” – Richard Kehoe (California, USA) titled his story “LOOKING TO HEAVEN;” here is a portion of Richard’s story:
“I tend not to spend much time thinking about heaven but focus instead on enjoying the benefits of this world, like watching movies, eating, and fishing. However, God directs us to ‘set our minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth’ (Col. 3:2).
“One exercise that has helped me shift my focus is to read the descriptions of heaven in the Bible and then trust the Holy Spirit to motivate my imagination to picture myself being there. One day, my picture of heaven involved a castle . . . fellowship with friends, and personal time with Jesus. I came away from the exercise more excited and looking forward to heaven. Of course, heaven will be much better than anything I can possibly imagine.
“I have found that looking forward to heaven this way has helped me to see that my hardships here are nothing compared to the glory I will experience in heaven. If we can always keep the joys and pleasures of our destination in mind, then our journey will be full of joy.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Thinking of heaven makes me more joyful about salvation in Christ.
Prayer: Help us, God, to be thankful every day for Christ’s sacrifice until we find our home in heaven with you. Amen.
Prayer Focus: GRATITUDE
