Dear Lord, open our hearts and our minds to the power of Your Word, which as we read, we may know, understand, and obey Your Word for us today. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. (Author unknown)
Today’s scripture reading:
The inspiration for today’s titled, “Spending time with Him through Bible reading and prayer,” came from the story in The Upper Room, see below.
Mary and Martha both loved Jesus. On this occasion they were both serving him. But Martha thought Mary’s style of serving was inferior to hers. She didn’t realize that in her desire to serve, she was actually neglecting her guest. Are you so busy doing things for Jesus that you’re not spending any time with him? Don’t let your service become self-serving. Jesus did not blame Martha for being concerned about household chores. He was only asking her to set priorities. Service to Christ can degenerate into mere busywork that is totally devoid of devotion to God. (NLT)
Luke 10:38-42 – As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”
But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Quoted verse: Mary has chosen the better part. It won’t be taken away from her. –Luke 10:42 (CEB)
“Story” – Emiriana Malelak-Bana (East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia) titled her story “A WONDERFUL FAMILY;” here is a portion of Emiriana’s story:
“In 2016, I again experienced ill health due to recurrent tuberculosis. . . . my husband was very busy working, and there was tension between my father and me. I resigned from my job to seek treatment for my illness; and while receiving treatment and caring for my family, I also set aside time for God.
“I prayed earnestly, devoting myself each day to an hour of prayer and Bible reading. I read the Bible from beginning to end. Through that devotional practice, I grew closer to God and discovered that life is about more than my immediate circumstances.
“It has been over a year since that time, and my relationship with God continues to grow. I have experienced physical healing, and my family situation has also improved. Through prayer and reading scripture, I have found the strength to face any situation because I know that God is with me.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Scripture reading and prayer can keep me close to God.
Prayer: Gracious God, thank you for bringing us closer to you. Help us always to seek you and find our hope in you. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
