Dear Lord, open our hearts and our minds to the power of Your Word, which as we read, we may know, understand, and obey Your Word for us today.  We pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.  (Author unknown)

Today’s scripture reading:

[He continues to be with us through His Spirit.]

How is Jesus “with” us?  Jesus was with the disciples physically until he ascended into heaven and then spiritually through the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit would be Jesus’ presence that would never leave them.  Jesus continues to be with us today through his Spirit. (NLT)

Matthew 28:16-20 – Then the eleven disciples left for Galilee, going to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go.  When they saw him, they worshiped him—but some of them doubted!

Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth.  Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.  Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you.  And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Quoted verse: Jesus said, “Where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”  –Matthew 18:20 (NIV)

“Story” – Dorothy Garrett Johnson (Michigan, USA) titled her story “ALWAYS WITH US;” here is a portion of Dorothy’s story:

“Several years ago my young daughter said to me, ‘In Sunday school we talk about Jesus.  I wish I could see Jesus.’  That evening as I was preparing dinner, I set an extra place at the table.  When the family gathered to eat, my daughter noticed the extra place setting and asked, ‘Who else is coming?’  I told her we were having a very special guest.  As we took our seats, I said, ‘Our special guest is Jesus.’

“. . .  I explained that Jesus is with us always.  He is as close to us as if he were sitting right next to us.  In fact, he is even closer, since his love is always in our hearts.  That evening, we were all reminded that Jesus is with us wherever we are and wherever we go.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Wherever I am, Jesus is there.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to remember that your presence surrounds us always.  We pray as Jesus taught us, “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.  Give us day by day our daily bread.  And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive everyone that is indebted to us.  And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil” (Luke 11:2-4, KJV).  Amen.
