Dear Lord, open our hearts and our minds to the power of Your Word, which as we read, we may know, understand, and obey Your Word for us today.  We pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.  (Author unknown)

Today’s scripture reading:

[We are members of His family.]

Verse 1 tells us who we are—members of God’s family, his children.  Verse 2 tells us who we are becoming—reflections of God.  (NLT)

1 John 3:1-2 – See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!  But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know him.  Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears.  But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is.

Quoted verse: Now if we are children, then we are heirs – heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.  –Romans 8:17 (NIV)

“Story” – Marcos Antonio Garcia (São Paulo, Brazil) titled his story “I BELONG!”  Here is a portion of Marcos’ story:

“Nearly everyone wants to feel they belong – that they are part of a group, have a cultural identity, and are accepted.  . . .  Despite having the same surname, some people do not experience the joy of belonging to a family, of being part of a joint history.  Many people have no one with whom they can share their joy and hope, or their sorrow and fear.

“In my ministry, I meet many people who come to church alone and become part of a new family – the family of God.  In Christ, we became co-heirs of the kingdom of God.  The family of faith can create space for new beginnings, renewed hopes for living this life, and new hope in life eternal.  It is God’s wish that we become part of his family.  Jesus taught this when he instructed the disciples to begin their prayer by saying, ‘Our Father.’  Jesus shared the glory of the Father with his disciples and with all of us.  Everyone is welcome in the family of faith because our heavenly Father loves us.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – I belong to Christ’s family of faith.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for making us a part of your family of faith.  Help us to invite others to find in you a real sense of being a family!  Amen.
