* Employer-employee relationships

It is often difficult to find people you can really trust.  A faithful employee (“messenger”) is punctual, responsible, honest, and hardworking.  This person is invaluable as he or she helps take some of the pressure off their employers.  Find out what your employers need from you to make his or her job easier, and do it. (NLT)

Proverbs 25:13 – Faithful messengers are as refreshing as snow in the heat of summer.  They revive the spirit of their employer.

* – Paul’s instructions encourage responsibility and integrity on the job.  Christian employees should do their jobs as if Jesus Christ were their supervisor.  And Christian employers should treat their employees fairly and with respect.  Can you be trusted to do your best, even when employers are not around?  Do you work hard and with enthusiasm?  Employers do you treat your employees as people, not machines?  Remember no matter whom you work for, and no matter who works for you, the one you ultimately should want to please is your Father in heaven. (NLT)

Ephesians 6:6-8 – Work hard, but not just to please your masters when they are watching.  As slaves of Christ, do the will of God with all your heart.  Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.  Remember that the Lord will reward each one of us for the good we do, whether we are slaves or free.

* – Slavery was common in Paul’s day.  Paul did not condemn slavery in any of his letters, but he advised slaves and masters to be loving and responsible in their conduct.  The standards set by Paul can help any employee/employer relationship.  Employees should always do their best work and be trustworthy, not just when the employer is watching.  Businesses lose millions of dollars a year to employee theft and time-wasting.  If all Christian employees would follow Paul’s advice at work, what a transformation it would make! (NLT)

Titus 2:9-10 – Slaves must obey their masters and do their best to please them.  They must not talk back or steal, but they must show themselves to be entirely trustworthy and good.  Then they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive in every way.

* Submitting to employers even if unjust

Many Christians were household slaves.  It would be easy for them to submit to masters who were gentle and kind.  But Peter encouraged loyalty and perseverance even in the face of unjust treatment.  In the same way, we should submit to our employers, whether they are considerate or harsh.  By so doing, we may win them to Christ by our good example.  Paul gave similar advice in his letters as did Jesus. (NLT)

1 Peter 2:18-21 – You who are slaves must accept the authority of your masters.  Do whatever they tell you—not only if they are kind and reasonable, but even if they are harsh.  For God is pleased with you when, for the sake of your conscience, you patiently endure unfair treatment.  Of course, you get no credit for being patient if you are beaten for doing wrong.  But if you suffer for doing right and are patient beneath the blows, God is pleased with you.

This suffering is all part of what God has called you to.  Christ, who suffered for you, is your example.  Follow in his steps.
