Experience, Experiences

* Share your experiences with your children

God told Moses that his miraculous experience with Pharaoh should be retold to his descendants.  What stories Moses had to tell!  Living out one of the greatest dramas in biblical history, he witnessed events few people would ever see.  It is important to tell our children about God’s work in our past and to help them see what he is doing right now.  What are the turning points in your life where God intervened?  What is God doing for you now?  Your stories will form the foundations of your children’s belief in God. (NLT)

Exodus 10:2 – “You will be able to tell wonderful stories to your children and grandchildren about the marvelous things I am doing among the Egyptians to prove that I am the Lord.”

* You grow spiritually through experiences

“Taste and see” does not mean, “Check out God’s credentials.”  Instead, it is a warm invitation: “Try this; I know you’ll like it.”  When we take that first step of obedience in following God, we cannot help discovering that he is good and kind.  When we begin the Christian life, our knowledge of God is partial and incomplete.  As we trust him daily, we experience how good he is. (NLT)

Psalm 34:8 – Taste and see that the Lord is good.  Oh, the joys of those who trust in him!

* Those who have much experience may offer good advice

It is natural and good for children, as they grow toward adulthood, to become increasingly independent of their parents.  Young adults, however, should take care not to turn a deaf ear to their parents—to reject their advice just when it is needed most.  If you are struggling with a decision or looking for insight, check with your parents or other older adults who know you well.  Their years of experience may have given them the wisdom you seek. (NLT)

Proverbs 6:20-23 – My son, obey your father’s commands, and don’t neglect your mother’s teaching.  Keep their words always in your heart.  Tie them around your neck.  Wherever you walk, their counsel can lead you.  When you sleep, they will protect you.  When you wake up in the morning, they will advise you.  For these commands and this teaching are a lamp to light the way ahead of you.  The correction of discipline is the way to life.
