Searchlight, searching, search

* Definition of search, searching, searchlight

Definition of search is to investigate or examine thoroughly in an effort to find or verify something.

Proverbs 20:27 – The Lord’s searchlight penetrates the human spirit, exposing every hidden motive.

* Search the Scriptures to verify the message

The religious leaders knew what the Bible said but failed to apply its words to their lives.  They knew the teachings of the Scriptures but failed to see the Messiah to whom the Scriptures pointed.  They knew the rules but missed the Savior.  Entrenched in their own religious system, they refused to let the Son of God change their lives.  Don’t become so involved in “religion” that you miss Christ. (NLT)

John 5:39-40 – [Jesus said] “You search the Scriptures because you believe they give you eternal life.  But the Scriptures point to me!  Yet you refuse to come to me so that I can give you this eternal life.”

* – How do you evaluate sermons and teachings?  The people in Berea searched the Scriptures for themselves to verify the message they heard.  Always compare what you hear with what the Bible says.  A preacher or teacher who gives God’s true message will never contradict or explain away anything that is found in God’s Word. (NLT)

Acts 17:11 – And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message.  They searched the Scriptures day after day to check up on Paul and Silas, to see if they were really teaching the truth.

* Spirit searches out everything

“God’s deep secrets” refers to God’s unfathomable nature and his wonderful plan—Jesus’ death and resurrection—and to the promise of salvation, revealed only to those who believe that what God says is true.  Those who believe in Christ’s death and resurrection and put their faith in him will know all they need to know to be saved.  This knowledge, however, can’t be grasped by even the wisest people unless they accept God’s message.   All who reject God’s message are foolish, no matter how wise the world thinks they are. (NLT)

1 Corinthians 2:10 – But we know these things because God has revealed them to us by his Spirit, and his Spirit searches out everything and shows us even God’s deep secrets.
