DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Saturday, May 21, 2016

Today’s scripture reading:

Several times Job’s friends showed a partial knowledge of God’s truth and character, but they had trouble accurately applying this truth to life. Such was the case with Eliphaz, who gave a beautiful summary of repentance. He was correct in saying that we must ask for God’s forgiveness when we sin, but his statement did not apply to Job who had already sought God’s forgiveness and had lived closelyin touch with God all along. (NLT)

Job 22:21-28 – “Stop quarreling with God! If you agree with him, you will have peace at last, and things will go well for you. Listen to his instructions, and store them in your heart. If you return to the Almighty and clean up your life, you will be restored. Give up your lust for money, and throw your precious gold into the river. Then the Almighty himself will be your treasure. He will be your precious silver!

“Then you will delight yourself in the Almighty and look up to God. You will pray to him, and he will hear you, and you will fulfill your vows to him. Whatever you decide to do will be accomplished, and light will shine on the road ahead of you.

Moses said, “Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart.” — Deuteronomy 6:6 (NRSV)

Linda Bonney Olin (New York) titled her story “STORE UP GOD’S WORD;” here is a portion of Linda’s story:

“. . . In the same way, if we store up some of the bounty of God’s word in our hearts, we can draw sustenance from that supply of encouragement and guidance when lean times come. In prosperous seasons, recalling a challenging Bible verse can jolt us out of spiritual complacency, like a tart bite of pickle. . . .

“Memorizing scripture is hard work for me, but I intend to keep at it, to transform my heart into a storehouse of God’s word so that I’ll always have a rich supply of wisdom and love to see me through!”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – What words from scripture do I store in my heart?

Prayer: O God, help us to memorize your word and bring these verses to our minds in times of trouble. As Jesus taught us, we pray, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one” (Matt. 6:9-13, NIV). Amen.
